The Potter - February 2023

Hello Saints, Jeremiah 18:4 - Now and then a vessel he was making from the clay would be spoilt in his hands, and he would remould it into another vessel to his liking. For many years I puzzled over this picture of God the Potter, trying to get my head around the possibility of God being a manipulator in my life rather than a benevolent Father. After all, does not the potter work the clay and is responsible for how it turns out? It was only when I realised that although God shaped me in his own image when I was born. He also graciously gave me freewill to make decisions and think for myself. And it is this understanding that has helped me make sense of the image of the potter. It is the clay in the potters’ hands that goes wrong and becomes misshapen or unworkable not the potter making something go wrong and that is why he must reshape it. There are many things in the world that take us away from the image God created and shaped when we were born. Things do go wrong, such as illness, bad decisions, outside influences all of which change and affect us in many ways. So, for me, it is wonderful to know that God will graciously hold me in his hand and gently reshape me into the perfect vessel he wants me to be. I hope this song is an encouragement to us, not to become disheartened or think that God is making unpleasant situations for us, or deliberately making our lives difficult. The reality is exactly the opposite. He is there waiting for us to call to him so that he can gently and graciously reshape us and remake us again and help us back on the right track. Please do check out the lyrics. Cheers Peter
