I'm an old school songwriter that never got good grades in that old school because I wanted to spend time writing instead of hearing people telling me how and what to write. I did a few years stint in Nashville and was on the edge of a major deal but it fell through when the guy who loved my stuff got fired for playing my politically and Nashilly incorrect, but very humorous stuff over the intercom of the major music entity. I decided to move back to Ohio and write short stories and novels. I have to write stuff. It gets in my head and annoys me until I write it down. My best advice.....If you love it, do it.
