Instrumental music can help create mood/atmoshere, but leaves it up to you where to take it from there. So much lyrical content is specific in what it does (i.e. describe the current romantic dilemna of the singer). For me, listening to and creating instrumental music is my ticket to living with a fulfilling and active imagination, thinking independently and going to all manner of places regularly.
