Ragged reggae praise
JLT Records' recording of "You're the King" by Jael is something you don't hear every day. It's an attempt at reggae praise and worship. That's a creative effort in and of itself, and I want to encourage the band to keep thinking outside the box. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite come together. The biggest problem is that the rhythm section is slightly out of synch with each other. It's hard to put my finger on what is going wrong, but the drums and bass are slightly off the beat from each other. The drummer overuses the cymbal (my opinion only) and when you throw in the rhythm guitar, there are a lot of moving parts. It's hard to keep all that tight through a long (4:33) song. The lead singer reminds me of Mark Knopfler, and he is trying to do a Jamaican accent. It doesn't quite work, plus he is too tense and growling for reggae, and a little pitchy. There are backing vocal parts in the song, that seem to be the same voice. The similarity in the voices cuts into the effectiveness of using the backing vocals as a counterpoint, sacrificing what could be a refreshing change for the ear. There is a nice tenor sax in the intro, but then you never hear him again, even though there is an extensive break. The songwriting is good, and conveys the feeling of all creation groaning in anticipation of the king's return. The words, the melody, and the chord progression flow well from section to section. The message holds my attention from start to finish. There is significant talent and creativity here, and I'm interested in hearing where the band goes next.
