Throwback

Nice production. Good tune. Pleasing vocals. Good join. Interesting chord progression. Good use of melody, dig the aux percussion thing. Bass is a tad busy for me. All in all, really a nice song

Simple and pure Soul felt music. Wow!

Helpful

Simple and pure soul felt music. I love the introductory guitar bars. That is followed by a powerful deep and crystal clear male vocal solo, singing in a style that is a cross between pure early soul music and traditional spiritual music. Wow! Just Powerful – The lyrics are really clear. I heard every bit of the “message” clearly on the 1st listen and I must say that the lyrics are excellent. This “clarity” – one of the things that makes this performance so wonderful, is something I must emphasize because in too many other wise great songs vocals/lyrics clarity is either poor or lacking completely. The music and the words of a song are equally important and this rendition of “Bars of Sin” demonstrates that clearly. Beside the great vocal and lyrics I also love the guitar, bass, conga drum and harmonica work in this piece. They all work together contributing to a fantastic performance. And again … I must also make special mention of the really fantastic lyrics (great imagery). I consider good lyrics to be one of the fundamental ingredients/basics of good song writing as is also demonstrated by this song. Great music! Great message! Great song writing! Keep it up.

Good acoustic guitar sound that sets the tone of the song. The vocals are a a good match emotionally for the lyrics. Harp is clean and clear, play it more it more. I would suggest that while the chord progression is interesting and a original, it tends to ramble and loses my interest a bit and is pretty far afield from blues forms. You have a great opportunity with the title being a great lyrical hook-take advantage of that, repeat it more. after thought bring the hand drums up in the mix with a bigger reverb. nice work overall

I really like the message in the song, your voice sounded really good, the acoustic guitar was nice but I felt it lost something through the lead part. I think maybe a little electric would be nice after the 2nd Chorus and then have it play with the acoustic in the break would add some more energy to song. The mix is good and the recording quality sounds nice too, I think song is a bit long but overall I think you did a great job on it. Be blessed and may God use your song and your ministry!

Review of Bars of Sin by Harps To Halos

Right from the start I could tell this tune was going to be killer. Love the vocals, great lyrics as well. The blues harp is a great touch along with the percussion. Well recorded and executed. My only criticism is that this tune should have gone full electric in the arrangement from the second verse until the end. Other then that well done.

Listening through my headphones I can't think of anything to improve the song. I'm glad you added the bass line, it tugs at the heartstrings and adds to the emotion. The mix is good and clean with the vocals where they need to be. The lyrics are honest, we all have either been there or we have to go there. A song that brings us to our knees in repentance is sorely needed in this time, and it made us check your other songs. May it bring others to Christ, or a closer walk with Him!

Very inspirational! You tell a story with your song. It's like you are there and the listener is there too. The word choice is superp keeps the listener waqiting for the next verse. You have a great blues -folk voice. You put soo much color and character in your singing that there is no need for large layered instrumentation in this song. The guitar work is very well done and keeps in the pocket bringing in the percussion and bass slowly and then building them up to a rather nice jam at the end is also very tasteful. The song has a distinct beginning middle and end. Don't see that much these days. It is also necessary to get across your message. Christian music is the fastest growing genera on the airwaves these days. With songwriters like you who also deliver a performance like you do I can see why. Keep up the great work.

"Bars of Sin" by From Harps to Halos review. Cool blue chill vibe, very reminiscent of Neil Young and his acoustic guitar and the angst of "On the beach" feel. Especially with the very smooth harp playing. Nice breaks throughout. Very somber but cool feel, much emotion, the acoustic lead adds to the CSN&Y feel, kinda like from "Four Way Street", it seems to add a little bit of "hurriedness" to the song ( not sure if thats the right word, but its a good thing, LOL ) Very good vocals, they add to the angst and worries of the tune and are well delivered.

Hi Harps to Halos, I actually quite like this song just as it is. I don't have anything to criticize BUT if it was MY song, I'd try recording it several different ways. First thing I'd try is to back off the vocals a long way and put an effect on them... kind of like hearing them over a telephone or something... just to try and give it an interesting twist. If that didn't excite me, I'd try to electrify the whole thing. I DO like the personality of the acoustic guitar... but perhaps just a crying/weeping electric guitar solo as a bridge in there somewhere. It's a great song that I would just try and give a little personality too. When I record a song, I sing the track along with the band to a click and we do kind of a scratch track. I do the best I know how with it at that point and then when we record the instrumental tracks, the band uses my scratch track to record to. I then take the completed unmixed instrumental track home with me and work with them for about 2-3 months... trying all kinds of different things with the vocals... even melody changes in places. It's usually a big surprise what the final thing sounds like when I do this because I've explored a LOT of possibilities by then. I often use a vocal coach to help me figure out those possibilities as well. I recommend Jeannie Deva in California. You can do the lessons by Skype and she's coached everyone from Cher to Shakira. It's not cheap, I know... but sometimes it's the difference between good and amazing. Best of fortunes with Bars of Sin, my friend. Rock on! ~Julie C Myers

Very nice sound, The vocals and words are very clear so we can get the message in your music. If this is just a demo I think you should release it because it is a good song. Profyle Muziq

The beginning of the song draws you in with the familiar guitar rifts. The singers voice is so full and meshes well with the music. This is my first time hearing a blues christian song and I am blown away by the arrangements and vocals. Very impressive indeed!
