I told you a little bit about what went on at the Peabody, which was the music school I attended in Baltimore; how I started to listen to and play music from many different genres even though the school itself was strictly classical. I had become excited about the idea of creating a music that was pop-classical fusion music and I tried switching my minor to music composition. This didn’t last long as the teacher I had was trying to remake me into an Avant-garde serialism composer, which was considered the end-all, be-all at that time. This was all about composing music with specific formulas and this was simply too limiting for me, so I dropped out of the composition department and went underground with my composition projects. After graduating from the Peabody with a bachelor’s in performance, I did some graduate work at Cal-State Fullerton, in an effort to salvage my career. This proved much more fruitful; a new violin teacher got my technique turned around in short order and I was playing professionally in symphonies and various groups. The composition department was also much less restricting. The Avant-garde had pretty much died out by then and I joined a minimalist group of twelve composers that played regular gigs and recorded. Our highlight, I think, was opening for Hunter S. Thompson at The Coach House in San Clemente. After a year or so we all went our separate ways and I continued to play in different groups including one I put together called The Jabberwocky. I was still frustrated, however, trying to communicate a new style to other musicians. A big part of this, however, was because I hadn’t realized what it was myself. I quit all the groups and went on a spiritual journey, Jack Kerouac style; “There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.”. ... I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.”. ... But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.”. Eventually, I was able to get outside of my own self enough to view what I was doing as someone else. I had gone full circle, from audience to composer and back to audience again! I began writing things I enjoyed listening to and this led to the first tracks I called the ‘Charm City’ CD. I posted some of these tracks up on different music sites and sort of forgot about them for a while. When I checked in on them later, I was surprised to find I had acquired several thousand fans and some of the tracks were at the top of the charts for these websites! I started getting very encouraging emails and requests for more music and this led to the creation of the next CD called ‘4 Good Measure.’ This CD pushes the envelope on the original pop-classical fusion style of ‘Charm City,’ and I want you, dear subscriber to have the opening track, ‘4x4’ for FREE.
