A Troubadour That Rocks - Really! Philadelphia singer/songwriter Tony Mecca serves wisdom from deep in the inner city via a delicious storytelling based blueprint that inventively incorporates elements of Pop, Blues, Folk and plain old Rock 'n Roll. His stories fuse equal amounts of humor and sympathy to thoughtfully examine life experiences, personalities and real people dealing with ordinary and sometimes surreal circumstances. But plodding and tedious meditation are avoided at all costs, and rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities are injected at every opportunity to keep the proceedings vibrant, fun and quite distant from the music of most other artists residing in the singer/songwriter region. Through live performances with his Heavy MeNtal Gypsys, and his steadily growing recorded output - Purple Monkeys (2003) / Princes of the New Dark Age (2005) / Hello, Goodbye & Everything in Between (2007) / Fun (2011) – Mecca has developed a loyal following in and around his home town that is gradually beginning to infiltrate other regions both nationally and abroad. In reviews his songs and sound has been compared to Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Tom Waits and Cat Stevens. In a poll of his fans he was described as: “The bastard son of Huey Lewis and Joni Mitchell” – “The Who fronted by John Prine” – “The Working Man’s Wagner”.
Stephanie Davis-Gonzalez
Stephanie is a classically trained mezzo-soprano who has a great appreciation for the classics, as well as an open mind to all genres of music. She is a powerful vocal force, and has been a huge part of Tony & The Heavy Mental Gypsys live show from the very beginning. "Tony and I are musical soul mates. The other thing we have in common is that we are never wrong."
Jim Drnec
If you took the time to listen to all the gigs Jim Drnec has played back to back, you'd have one hell of a headache. He's played with Hyde Your Daughters, Habits, Cinderella and Network to mention just a few. And according to Jim, "I'll need to draw on all of those influences to color the diverse auditory program that Tony Mecca offers his listeners."

Our new album, FRACTURED POETRY, had it's worldwide release in August/September. We are thrilled with the reviews and responses we've received from both critics and our loyal fans in the early going. MY GIRLFRIEND LIED is one of the early favorites. Here are just a few reviews from critics and fans:
"Musically this album is a joy to listen to....I followed the lyrics with the enclosed booklet, and again I'm amazed at the depth of your words. I'm so thankful I discovered the Gypsys, and truly hope this isn't your last album. Keep writing and making beautiful music, your talent should be heard and shared." JY (Norristown, Pa)
"Just writing to tell you that I think your new album is brilliant. Unlike a lot new music I have heard, this work is worthy of multiple listens instead of one and done. What impressed me is using great songs, with lyrics that actually speak to the listener with something to think about. There is no bashing of the same old chords. The vocals are wonderful! Truly a great piece of work. Hopefully you will have the chance to play this material live!" GL (Philadelphia, Pa)
" This music (to our ears) evokes classic American rock, like Springsteen, or the Afghan Whigs (Tony's voice) and is well-played and produced throughout. The song list - from ballads through upbeat pop to genuine rock wig-outs - bowls along with some great hooks and choruses. The sounds used really tickled our '70s sensibilities, (a real issue for us!), the arrangements were always interesting and the playing excellent There are no weak tunes in this collection, but a few particularly appealed to us, including Fun House - a terrific start to the album that really evoked the Afghan Whigs for us; Terrifying Lies - with its wonderful minor chord progression; Fall Fade and Forget - with its rocking groove and, finally, The Dark Side of Love - a great closer. We would recommend to anyone, who enjoys good quality American rock music, to track this down" J&B K. (Perth, (expired link).)
"I Love It! I put the CD into my iTunes and loaded it on my phone so I can listen to it wherever I am. Fractured Poetry and Terrifying Lies are probably my favorite at this point, but I don’t skip any tracks when I listen to them. Great work!" JD

Our new album, FRACTURED POETRY, had it's worldwide release on August 14, 2020. We are thrilled with the reviews and responses we've received from both critics and our loyal fans in the early going. Of course, it is disappointing for us to be delayed in presenting these songs live, but we are confident we will overcome these challenging times, and see you all "out there" very soon. FUN HOUSE is the opening track from the album. Please share with your friends, and visit our sites where the album is available. Any kind of purchase, no matter how small, helps us get through this difficult time.
Philadelphia Writer Louis Greenstein writes...
Tony Mecca's gravel-soul voice really pulls me in. I've been a fan of his Heavy MeNtal Gypsys for six years and have caught the band live a couple times. On this album they up their game. The sweet harmonies, the delightful strings, the sharp, bright arrangements had me tapping my feet and bobbing my head from start to finish. Not a wasted note, not one filler track. Mecca is a top-notch songwriter in his prime, his band is simply joyous, and the production quality on this record is outstanding. From the rocking opener "Fun House" to the plaintive "Lonely Lisa," to the sweet and meditative title track and its instrumeNtal reprise, the album is a potent and deeply satisfying emotional journey. On songs like "The Best Laid Plans," long-time collaborator Stephanie Davis-Gonzalez harmonizes with Tony so delightfully it reminds me of effortless sibling harmonies from legends like the Everly Brothers. It's two singing as one — Davis-Gonzalez's voice complementing Mecca's, blending into a singular sound not unlike Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons. Mecca has gathered a fantastic group of musicians who lend their talents in support of a gorgeous, well made album that I recommend to anyone who loves thoughtful, poetic, well made rock and roll.

Hello Friends,
I hope this communication finds you in good health, and that you are surviving well during these strange times. Here is another song that I hope will bring a smile to your face, "I Ain't That Stupid Anymore" is about all of us. Since we all think we know what's best, it often takes awhile to learn some of life's lessons. Have a laugh, and hoping to add some new music soon.
NEW ALBUM UPDATE
It goes without saying that our country, and the rest of world, has hit the pause button on all of life's routine, daily activities. In addition, the small pleasures in life that we enjoy, and take for granted, have surrendered to more serious areas of focus. Consequently, the music industry, and all it's creative, production and manufacturing entities have ceased most all operations.
While we are concluding the final stages of production on our new album (FRACTURED POETRY), state sanctions, "stay at home" orders, and shutdown CD manufacturing plants, will absolutely delay our release date. We will continue to post songs from our other releases to SPOTIFY (please follow us), N1M, FACEBOOK, and other social media platforms. Enjoy "Suzie," and please stop by our website and say hello. Stay safe, Tony Mecca

About Tony Mecca
A troubadour that rocks - really!
Popular Philadelphia singer/songwriter Tony Mecca serves wisdom from deep in the inner city via a delicious storytelling based blueprint that inventively incorporates elements of Pop, Blues, Folk and plain old Rock 'n Roll.
Fusing equal amounts of humor and sympathy, Mecca thoughtfully examine everyday people dealing with ordinary and surreal life circumstances. But with his eclectic approach, robust delivery, and a gritty Philly twist, he quickly dispels any preconceived stereotypes associated with the Singer/Songwriter region.
Through live performances with his Heavy MeNtal Gypsys, playing hundreds of shows from Washington (expired link). to New York, and with headliners such as Gene Loves Jezebel, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Pat Travers, and a steadily growing recorded output - Purple Monkeys (2003) / Princes of the New Dark Age (2005) / Hello, Goodbye & Everything in Between (2007) / Fun (2011) / Heavy Mental Gypsies (January 2016), Mecca has developed a loyal following in and around his home town of Philadelphia that has gradually infiltrated other regions both nationally and abroad.
His music has been labeled Classic Rock, Singer/Songwriter Rock and Adult Contemporary among others.
In reviews his songs and sound has been compared to Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, The Smithereens and even Tom Waits. In a poll of his fans he was described as: “The bastard son of Huey Lewis and Joni Mitchell” and “The Who fronted by John Prine.”.
As anyone more than a little familiar with Tony Mecca’s music will tell you, his infectious raspy voice and hook laden melodies may initially confiscate most of your attention, but it is his sage commentary on the beauty and failings of the "human drill" that will eventually permeate your head, heart and soul.
