About Sam Haines

In a nutshell...
Sam Haines is a composer/performer of instrumental music and creative ensembles in good old Bucks County, PA. His musical vision is one that includes elements of music from around the world and all through history. His approach to composition is to always convey a mood and tell just enough of a story to create a world in which his audience can find inspiration and be uplifted.
Sam began his musical studies on with Bob Heinle, former oboist and violinist under Eugene Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra. After 2 years studying illustration at St. John's University in Queens, NY, Sam decided to switch his professional focus to music and composition in 1999 after experiencing performing for various college theatre and other productions. He graduated with a BA in Music with a minor in illustration from Mansfield University in 2003. For the last 20 years he has developed his skills as a musician, audio engineer, producer, and composer/arranger in both live and studio settings. In addition to creating his own music, Samuel loves to work in collaborative relationships with other musicians, and has had many fine experiences.
Sam has worked closely with many musicians in numerous ensembles. As a lover of Jazz, Sam continues to perform in the tri-state area with some amazing musicians. Sam performs stand up bass with the jazz combo “Jazz With Friends“ (2014-current), as well as, the Montgomery County Jazz Big Band (2017-current) and subs for the Doylestown Heat Big Band.

Previous collaborations include:
Live Jazz (2003-2005), Sam helped found a group of jazz artists in the Finger Lakes region of NY that performed weekly at an upscale restaurant in Corning's Gaffer District and performed in multiple jazz festivals in the area. In addition, he supported student led jazz ensembles at his alma mater, Mansfield University after graduation.

Push Dawn (2004-2007) was an Indie Rock band based in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Sam collaborated in song writing with Nathan Miller, Brett Powell, Chris Kubrick, Melvin Williams and Laura Kahl. Sam wrote parts for the bass, generated lead sheets for rehearsals, headed up all sound design and technical details and co-engineered their debut self-titled album in 2005. Push Dawn performed in NY and central PA and was included on the bill at many regional music festivals, including the Watkins Glen Wine Festival held at the famous Watkins Glen Raceway 2004-2006. See “Nowhere Fast Without You” in the playlist.

From 2009 to 2013, he was the sound engineer for the Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra, the oldest contiguously performing Gilbert and Sullivan stage troop in the nation.

From 2009-2014, he managed his own recording studio supporting the work of local musicians and composers, new age meditation cd's, and gave supportive services to artists on various projects around the world.

The Zen Sessions (2011-2014) is another creative, collaboration-based ensemble working with the sounds of strings, Native American flute, human voice, and amazing indigenous instruments from around the world. The gorgeous and enchanting soundscapes created by Eric Labacz, Sam, Ashley Smith, and Todd Zeiseness capture the imagination of the listener and open up other worlds to be expressed and explored. (see in the playlist “Machu Picchu” “Beautiful” “Into Another”)
Spiral (2012) is the name of a world music/dance-techno collaboration inspired to feature world instruments in unique musical soundscapes. This group included the time and talents of Ashley Smith and Todd Zeiseness bringing their creative energies to songs and backing tracks produced by Sam. (see in the playlist “Reflections”)
In 2013, Sam worked with the Trenton-based talented song writer Siriom Singh on his 3rd album-“Hobo”. Hobo is about going on a journey, connecting with God, peace, and the strength to stand up in times of trial and share your truth and light! Sam supported the project by making talent recommendations, organizing rehearsals and performances, offsite recording with contributing talent while on tour in the area, writing, arranging and performing on bass and cello.

Through 2016-2017, Sam continued collaborating with Eric Labacz (Zen Sessions) putting on performances with local singer Alyssa Martin as the group “Waking Whales” enjoying modest local success and personal satisfaction.

Sam has been writing, arranging and performing with Ringoes-based guitarist/composer Michael Notarangelo (2011-current) on cello in their unique neo-classical-folk cello and guitar duet. They have performed for weddings, art openings, corporate events, private engagements, as well as, farmers markets, festivals, senior centers and coffee shops. Michael’s music is storytelling in rare form. (see in the playlist “Vena Amoris”)

Sam continues to compose and arrange music for string and wind ensembles as stand alone pieces and as accompaniment for other artists. (see in the playlist “Rondo No. 1”) Sam completed his Symphony No. 1 in Bb between 2015 and 2016. The work features and expands the music of Michael Notarangelo into a larger exhibition designed to showcase the modern steel string guitar in a classical orchestral setting.

Sam is excited about bringing his passion for expressive music to new venues and projects. His dream is to write his next piece of music exclusively for you!
