About Rubella Ballet

Thank Christ for Rubella Ballet! Punk went from being this fun colourful place to be, to all these miserable bastards wearing black! I knew what I’d see at Crass gigs, I knew what I’d hear played there ... Rubella Ballet where a breath of fresh air.” Steve Ignorant, Crass.

Built around the enduring nucleus of Sid Truelove and Zillah Minx, Rubella Ballet formed in 1979 when Crass invited their audience to use their equipment and finish the gig. The newly formed group took to the road with Crass and the Poison Girls and quickly established a unique niche, standing out from the multitudes in black combat wear with their day-glo visual image and a diverse range of material that encompassed elements drawn from across the sonic spectrum.

Having made an initial impact with their groundbreaking ‘Ballet Bag’ cassette pack in 1981, Rubella Ballet gigged heavily, presenting a celebratory spectacle of ultraviolet defiance that was driven relentlessly onward by Sid’s mighty rhythms and given context by Zillah’s unmatchable siren-song vocals.

After their debut, ‘Ballet Dance’ EP and subsequent ‘42f’ single impacted on the Independent Top Ten, the group continued to release new material intermittently across the decade.

The group returned to the studio in 2014, releasing Planet Punk, their first full length album in almost 25 years. A hit with critics and the group’s faithful following, the album drew upon a lifetime’s opposition to oppression and exploitation, emerging as what many cite as the band’s crowning achievement.

The album also saw Sid emerge from behind the drum kit to demonstrate his prowess as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and engineer. Now, four years on, Rubella Ballet have built upon the edifice of resistance defined within the grooves of Planet Punk, recording their latest studio LP, Danger Of Death, which will be available via Overground Records from late Summer 2018.

Heralded by the singles compilation, Day Glo Daze, issued on Last Hour Records, Danger Of Death throws the pure light of reason on a modern world torn asunder by forces that seek to control, obfuscate and exploit. A lambent beacon of pure ultraviolet truth, shining vividly against a backdrop of fake news and government lies, Danger Of Death features material that confronts today’s issues with honesty and defiance.

Part of the Peace Punk, or Anarchy Punk, movement of the early 1980s propelled by CRASS, rubella ballet were a bit younger than most of their contemporary Crass Records bands and therefore have survived the test of time.
I was lucky to have caught them on a rare mini tour of the West Coast of California in Sept 2018!
Live they play mostly their original old material from 1979-1986 (well, actually 1981-1986) when they released three albums and four singles (with non-lp tracks) and haven't changed their style - musically or visually.
Essentially you are seeing an authentic British punk band circa 1980 just as you would have seen them back then. Rubella should be right up there in the Pantheon of great British punk bands that have survived and are still great, such as The Damned, The Buzzcocks, and Stiff Little Fingers.
All of their records stand the test of time too - even their NEW releases.
The sound is tribal drumming (think early Adam and the Ants or Bow Wow Wow or Flux of Pink Indians) or British style Anarchy beat (think CRASS or Poison Girls) with driving, repetitive bass lines and grindy guitar riffs. What really sets Rubella Ballet apart is the female vox of Zillah Minx, often accompanied by her sister/bassist Rachel Minx. The lyrics and the vocal rhythms are forefront and set the stage for the music. Zillah's distinct and unique voice is unmistakable and has remained so over time. Much like Siouxsie, Zillah has carved her own niche in the history of British punk.
Songs like "Emotional Blackmail" and "Love Life" could only derive from a female pen. Whereas even political tunes such as "Belfast" include a conversation with "mommy." It's a subtle slant but one that sets the Rubella lexicon apart from many others' political lyrics.
If you are not already familiar with Rubella Ballet you should really check them them out. If you know them from the 1980s then you should really give their new stuff a listen - I think you will enjoy it. It is just as catchy and even more political than their early releases.
