About mieczyslaw (Mietek) Wolny

ABOUT MITCH
Mieczyslaw ,Mitch. Wolny is a flexible musician in the areas of Jazz, Smooth-Jazz, Pop and Classical music with a long history of composing, performing and recording music.
Mitch was first recognized for musical excellence while studying music at the Faculty of Jazz in Academy of Music in Katowice. He competed in a local Jazz Improvisation competition and took first place. Mitch’s public music career began in the 1970’s as a flutist in Wojciech Gogolewski Quartet, one of the most prominent jazz bands in Poland at the time. At the festival Jazz nad Odra he performed both with this quartet and as part of the Big Band Katawice and took second and first respectively.
Since this strong beginning Mitch has continued to strive for excellence and develop his range. He has focused on performing, recording and composing music and has had the opportunity to work with many other great Polish musical talents. His compositions for the Polish Radio Orchestra-Katowice and Opole have been widely used in broadcast media and his song “Lulubay for Alunia” reached second position on the Polish radio top 40 equivalent. He worked for many years composing and performing for Polish Radio and Television in Katowice and Opole.
Mitch now lives in the Chicago area and continues to focus on music. He performs and records with many Chicago talents including Patricia Barber, Rusty Jones, Art Davis, Bill Boris, Ed Harris, Nick Tountis, Larry Novak, Curt Warren, Robert Irwing III, Grazyna Auguscik, Marcin Januszkiewicz, and Paul Jarzebski.

Her Soft Smile, Mieczyslaw Wolny’s first solo album, is made up entirely of original compositions and arrangements. This smooth-jazz album highlights his talents on the flute and alto flute as well as his skill in programming complimenting drum, bass and keyboard parts. The album also showcases Art Davis on Flugelhorn, Bill Borris on Guitar, and the assistant programming of Robert Irwing III and Michael Stygar. A review of this album can be found in the September 2002 edition of Jazz Forum.
