The poetry in this song represents the desire to move from a state of darkness to a state of light...both light and darkness are personified in this song. It expresses our desire to live in the light...in a happy, bright and positive environment that often is difficult to reach, yet in the song the personification of darkness (or the person it is talking about) moves into light, taking a leap of faith so to speak, to make changes in life to improve it.
