About Louie

Musical integrity. Obsessive dedication. Good hygiene. These are some of the qualities that you will be hard-pressed to witness in me and my music.

This whole 'music-thing' (as my folks so poignantly put it) has been an ongoing experiment that I have been unable to bring to satisfactory completion- so far- in my many years as a human, on this violent watery rock, in this back-water partition of the universe.

For me and what I consider my musical journey, it all started with an accidental acid trip way back when, before the end-times, resulting in an overnight transformation from a music lover into a player of music, and then later, a writer of song and performer of same.

I have taken musical influence from some of the strangest people, places and things (nouns mostly) in my travels and have been able to cobble together some really good tunes out of the hot-mess I have loosely, but not too often, referred to as 'my true passion'.

If I have learned nothing else about myself, which is a fair bet, I have learned that I do not love music. Love is not a strong enough emotion to describe how I feel about music. Not just my own valiant attempts at it either. I cannot give an accurate list of my musical influences because I don't think I'm given enough space on here to genuinely do so.

As a writer, I try to lyrically bring deep imagery into the recipe that pairs well with the music that's flowing through the ether at any particular time- usually around 2am. Some times it just comes out messy and smacks of half-hearted technical effort and ineffectual narratives.

Other times, the truly magical ones, everything just clicks and I have to restrain my impulse to use as many tracks as I can muster, in order to add layer upon layer of instruments and vocals- in an attempt to convey what I hear in my head.

Sometimes it gets pretty crowded in there.

Sometimes its just a barren hell-scape that has a lingering after-taste of existential dread, crippling anxiety and for some reason, burned toast with strawberry jam.

As a performer, I am well-traveled and experienced at playing venues that were little more than jails with a wet bar, and venues that were big enough to house the crowd of a mid-ranked junior college lacrosse match.

I have had to use my guitar as a weapon, more than once (self-defense).

I have had shit thrown at me from across a crowded barroom by a woman who thought I was someone else (to her credit, I did resemble David to a certain extent... if you were looking at me in the right light, and had been drinking Rattlesnakes since 11am).

I have had to take cover behind old Peavey SP2 PA cabinets when a full bar fight (80+ people) broke out, a mere three notes into the first song of the night and still played for five hours- only to be stiffed out of $200 by a bar owner who was an ex-deputy Sherriff who felt it necessary to tuck two .38's in the waste band of his jeans... while working in the bar.

I have played shows at county fairs in places that I am pretty sure were somehow not located in any counties.

I've played sober. I've played wasted. I've played well. I've played like shit.

I have put as many hours driving to and from shows as I have put playing the actual shows.

I've been ripped off by venues, by bar patrons (ordering things on my tab) and have been held up after getting paid for the night before.

I have had relationships go south because they couldn't get past the fact that, if someone flashes me their tits while I'm on stage, even if its a guy, There's a 100% chance that I am going to look.

I have dealt with delicate primidone prodigies who were totally convinced that they were above hauling, loading, setting up and- when necessary- paying for repair of gear. And as good as they were, I had no hesitation in firing them when I reached my limits (I have a very low tolerance for people who make me work harder for an equal cut of pay).

As bad as all that is, was, and probably will continue to be... I will take it every time over fucking indifference.

I will gladly deal with the wedding drunks wanting to hear a song they can't name from an artist they can't remember.

I will deal with the cheating and lying and theft that occurs every bit as often as it does in politics. I will slap a smile on my face and play Wagon Wheel for the forth time in one night.

I will do all these things, and most definitely worse, rather than spend my time and energy providing a decent soundtrack for everybody's good time, only to look out at an audience with their nose glued to a 2x3 phone screen.

If you come to a venue that's offering live music and you are not there to partake, then move the fuck over. There's someone else out there that wants those 6 seats at the table that you are taking up with your party of 2.

Sorry.

Didn't mean to get all preachy about it, but that's a particularly sore spot with me.

*I mean, if you want to scream and shout with your dick out, then maybe don't go to the public library. If you want to stare at a phone all night, then why bother leaving the house, paying a cover, shelling out too much for watered down drinks and sitting on your ass, wishing the smoking hot band on stage would play quieter.

Anyway, that's about all I can really say about myself (at least until I am sure the statute of limitations has expired). well... there's obviously a lot more to me, but this is the most pertinent info concerning who I am as a writer and performer. I'm not the best guitar player in the world (hell, I'm not even the best guitarist in my band) but I can lay a solid rhythm down, sing my heart out and make it look effortlessly easy.

I have never written a hit song.

I have never been remotely famous and definitely have never been confused with someone who had much more than $20 on them 4 hours after a pay-day.

But I have managed to somehow make a decent living as a full-time musician for over 20 years.

I have also developed into a fairly decent producer as well. When I started going into recording studios, it was mostly analog tape machines. I learned how to work with that stuff first and I am all the better for it.

I'm no analog purist, but it seems to my ears that the music being churned out before Pro-tools came along has a bit more heart to it. But I also love digital as well. Makes the work go faster.

Have a listen and tell me what you think of my tunes. I have plenty more.

Peace
