About Doug LaVine

Doug LaVine was born in Utica, New York on October 19th 1939. Raised in Deerfield, (expired link). and attended Horatio Seymour school and Utica Free Academy. When he was growing up he was always interested in music. At family functions his father played a guitar while one of his Aunts would play an old piano that was in the house. He stood in awe as he watched the family sing songs and play those instruments! It was those family gatherings that had a huge influence on Doug that would lead him to choose music as his first love! As a small boy he would climb onto that old stool by the piano and touch those keys that played a note and carried him into a wonder filled world where he would dream and learn about music! Soon he was able to play the notes of simple children’s songs. Song’s like “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star “. It gave him great satisfaction to be able to play those songs. Sometimes he would play those songs for his Aunt Alice and his Uncle Tom. They would give him a nickel and he would be so proud and pleased. It was encouraging for him and he would try to learn more songs. As he got older he wanted to play the guitar and whenever he could he would get his father’s guitar out and try to play that. His actions are not recommended for others to follow but Doug learned how to pick the lock on his dad’s guitar case and then try to teach himself how to play! When he was old enough he would get summer jobs and save his money to buy books that would show where to put his fingers to play chords. He taught himself how to play some songs that were being played on the radio. Finally he saved up enough money to buy himself his own guitar.
By the time he got out of high school he started playing for his (expired link) met some of his friends that also liked music and they would get together and play songs. The next step was becoming obvious! Let’s play in a place where we can get paid for playing. Word got out and soon club owners found where Doug lived and went to see him. They picked Doug because they heard that he could sing. One thing lead to another until one day a club owner asked Doug if he would like to make a record! The challenge was that he had to write the songs! He accepted and wrote a song called “Tick Tock “! Doug got a couple of his friends to play on his record and away they went! When the record finally came out in 1967…it was on all the radio stations and all the juke boxes! The song became a regional hit! It got support from almost everybody! One weekend, on a Sunday afternoon Doug took his band to a Jamboree, to see what was going on! Back in the 1960’s and early1970’s, jamborees were everywhere! When Doug and his band arrived at the place where the jamboree was being held, he met a DJ from a local country music radio station. Doug and the DJ became instant friends! He gave one of his records to the DJ and asked him if he would play his record on his radio show! Hank, the DJ told him that he would! Then Doug and his band got up to play! They tore the house down! He made a few new fans doing that show! The next day the DJ, Hank, played his record and told his listeners about what he saw at the Jamboree the day before! After that Doug was a frequent guest on that station with all of the other DJ’s!
Doug then began to write more songs. In 1973 Doug was asked if he would be interested in a recording contract. He jumped at the chance and was soon in (expired link). recording at Paramount Recording Studios!
He left Paramount two years later and became independent. He kept working and entertained in many places around the (expired link) had many setbacks and always overcome all. In 1976, Doug moved to Ft Lauderdale, Florida. He took some time off and began to plan what he would do next. He kept himself busy writing and doing shows until 1980. He then put a new band together and named it RODEO. He kept very busy performing, writing and recording.
In the autumn of 1984 after returning from Nashville He realized he had to make some changes and that was the end of RODEO! However, Doug kept himself busy. In the spring of 1985, He was involved in a serious accident and suffered many injuries! He was told that it was going to take a while to get back to almost 100 percent! Two months after the accident Doug became a father when his son Eric was born. Now….This changed everything! Now he was unable to perform as he had in the past! Then, after ten months Eric’s mother left! Now Doug was left to raise his son on his own!
Doug decided that he would build a house and raise horses! He got right to it! When the house was done he started buying horses! He worked hard between surgical operations and bringing up his boy! He told his friends “This is not easy but I’m going to get it done!”This went on for 17 plus years! Finally, after all the years had passed, it was now time to figure out what would be next! His son Eric was now out of school and he had taught him what he needed to know about horses. He wondered what was going on in the music world while he was raising his son and working with horses.
It was now 2005. His son was getting married and things were looking good! On October 25th, 2005 around 10 am, Eric was getting ready to go into town for a job interview. A friend had come to the house to drive him into town for the interview. So, Eric and his fiancé got into the car and waved goodbye. He said they would be back sometime in the afternoon. Things seemed pretty normal as Doug was taking it easy at the house. Then, around 5pm a state trooper and two chaplains knocked on the door. Doug answered the door and they came inside. Then they delivered the horrible news! Doug’s son Eric had been killed along with his fiancé and the driver of the car, along with two other people in another vehicle! Doug was stunned and was speechless as the chaplains and the trooper grabbed him and started praying! It seemed like forever before he regained his composure and was able to sit down. It was a few minutes before the men left the house. Now, Doug was truly alone!
The next day, Doug began writing music again! He told an old friend that he had to do something to keep depression from becoming unbearable! After so many years away from music he began to write something for his beloved son Eric! He continued writing for two years. He wrote for 10hrs a day. Sometimes 12 hrs a day! When he finished he called Larry Rogers in Nashville. Larry helped Doug to get his music recorded. Then in October 2007 on Doug’s Mother’s birthday he released an album he called My Life ~ My Music!
When asked who does he credit for getting him through all the challenges he replies God, family, and all who supported me!
