Donivan / Songs / Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

A good facsimile

Donivan has captured the essence of Billy Joel. Tackling such an involved song, Donivan has shown his expertise and flair for Billy Joel's style. The musicianship in this recording is top drawer. I enjoyed this very much as I am a big fan of the man himself. I will look for other recordings from Donivan.

Scenes From An Italian Restaurant

This recording was mastered well instrumentally throughout the recording. Great lower eq's which is often overlooked in many recordings, excellent piano skills, well displayed musicianship all around. Very impressive. The drums are laid in just right, never over playing, and your saxophonist was superb on this recording. In fact instrumentally this is one of the best bands displayed on this website. The vocals are inspired, clear, and well enunciated. Donivan pays fine respect to Billy Joel in his phrasing and delivery. There were two times when the lead singer accentuated a phrase with an "ohh...," where the note and vocal support slightly wavered and I heard flat tones. For this type of expressive song everything must be on point or the delivery itself can distract the listener. Keeping in theme with East Coast vocal styling the singer stays well in character although in the middle section the singer's voice didn't allow the delivery to be sustained at the end of his phrasings. I understand the quick time syncopation taking place, time signature changes, instrumental ad libs, but the voice must stand out and when the breath slightly fell this was noticeable. I wanted to hear the vocal more up in the mix, the effects on the vocals mix were lost as they were competing with the backing instrument tracks and needed more separation. All in all, this recording holds up because of the overall musicianship and if the singer is also the pianist, any slight lack of vocal support is completely understood. The song feels complete and this band is very tight, I'd love to hear their original music. Let me just add the band "killed it!"

Your song

Hi Donivan Very nice melody, I like the arrangement. The instrumental was very good. Wasn't a fan of the transition to the different tempo. Enjoyed the first part much more. Piano is really good Terry

Beautiful song

The song begins slowly with the piano and the voice. we think of Randy Newman who warms up in backstage of a concert. Then little by little the brass takes their place, and the melody explodes in our ears. There we drift on the lands of cat steven or a murray head at its beginning. Then finally hollows and bumps of this song in the long course appears the identity of Donivan, and we do not lose the change, far from it.

A mix of music abilities

There's a mix of music genres in this long song, fast an exam of your abilities! You've passed the test, because you play very well sax and piano, your music knowledge is positive and complete.

Great Song

I feel you have great taste in music. your vocals are decent for covers, but I would much rather hear you try something original. you could buy mixcraft on ebay for under 50 bucks, they have all kinds of drop and drag tracks with great FX even a compresser and EQ for mixing. you can make an MP3 real easy. I think you would shine much brighter bringing your own originals to the table. again I love your music taste. if I was into doing covers I would be looking at you, but I truly feel you have better in you. I hope you don't take this review wrong. you look like a real cool guy. I wish you the very best". Peace Joe Garrison

Billy Joel

Very musical. The singer has a fantastic voice with a real rock touch. Awesome. All the other instruments sound rocky and tight with a dirty sound. Cool. This is a song that I would recommend to others.

Buen selección de temas y buena interpretación, la parte instrumental está muy bien, la selección de instrumentos me parece muy correcta sin abusos de ningún tipo. La voz es potente y con personalidad y las melodías están bastante bien. Good selection of songs and good interpretation, the instrumental part is very good, the instrument selection seems very correct without abuse of any class. The voice is powerful and with personality and the melodies are pretty good.

Remarkable Cover-Version

This studio recording make me remembering again the imagination of the popular song from B. Joel´s album "The Stranger" in 1977. Billy is a class all by himself. But Donivan is with this great cover-version very close to. He has a real dynamic voice and brilliant vocal projection. The virtuos piano sounds perfect and carry the recording. This is definitely a very professional and similar arrangement. The song is a medley of three distinct styles fused into one. "Italian Restaurant" begins as a gentle, melodic piano ballad and segues into a uptempo jazz-influenced music including clarinet, trombone, tuba and saxophone solo, leading into a rock and roll song. This one is a really perfect studio recording and overall an impressive cover-version. The song was a radio hit and it´s worth to listen to this ambitous reproduction. I´m sure you will like to add it. Let others know your recommendation.

In MY Opinion

Greetings, Thank you for choosing me to review your work, I count it an honor to be included in such a task. My hat is off to you and anyone willing to step out and share their gift, talent and love of music to the public. Be it a musician, singer, song writer, actor and so-on. I myself, via 40 some years of experience in the fields, on the road, in the studio, radio, TV, video, and management, consider myself to be a seasoned musician, singer, song writer, studio-sound tech/engineer/ owner/operator, stage manager, find it sometimes hard/difficult and perhaps not even fair to sit in a seat, voicing My Opinion concerning another's creative efforts. Especially in certain genres of music I am not all that familiar with concerning very important elements that make up and meet the required standards to justify the various levels of ratings and grades. So, in saying ALL that, I will limit myself to MY Opinion concerning the quality of the work according to My ears, and the standards I have been familiarized with thru-out the years. I hold to the old - saying " Beauty Is In The EAR of The Beholder ... LOL. The sound quality of the recording over-all is very crisp and bright and clear, I really enjoyed the sax, love a sax.Vocals are smooth and natural. Enjoyed the change of the tempo and energy thru-out the song. The mix levels let me know who was still in charge of this song. Very easy to sit back and listen to. The slower portion of the song and message held my attention the most, and easier to focus on. I mean no offense in any part, I myself take all feedback and use it as a tool toward my next project. I pray you feel the same way. Either way, I say to you, keep doing what you do, keep kicking and enjoying what you do. I tell folks all the time for many years. When it stops being FUN, then it's time to stop, and stand back and think about what we are doing, why we are doing it, how we are doing it, what we and others are getting out it. Is it what we want, and how we want it. IF NOT. what are willing to do from there? Thank you again for asking MY OPINION. Johnny

Review - Donivan -Scenes from italian Restaurant - LaSueede

Good start with the piano. Reminds little of Billy Joel. I myself miss little guitar but i think i understand the concept. The Piano playing is really good. The singing can sometimes feeling little restrained and the voice can miss some tunes... I also like the sax (trombone) ? in the song but the hero in the song is definitely the piano. Can miss a little deep in the Grand piano. Little more reverb!? The lyric is soft and follows the title. The bass is good. I myself like more the native feelings of drums and i think that would suit this kind of music. Anyway a pretty good relax late dinner song. Regards LaSueede

Just like the original. Very nice!

Well done. Vocal and instruments rival the original. The band. Is very tight . You are very talented. You could easily put together a Billy Joel tribute band and bevery successful. Keep putting more music like this out here.
