TANYA. The song opens with a Russian proverb: 'Tanya, we are a dark people' and the video is dedicated to the memory of all those murdered in recent times (seven are commemorated in the video). To me, 'Tanya' has become a metaphor for the Russian people, who always seem to draw the short straw from history - what with the Czars, communism, and now, a form of gangster capitalism. The song was originally written about a girl with the code name ‘Tanya’ - real name Tamara Bunke – she was a revolutionary who became Che Gueverra’s girl friend and like him, died in the Bolivian jungle. "Will my name one day be forgotten and nothing of me remain on the Earth?" she wrote in a poem. Dave Scott-Morgan
