For most it can be scary . Money can be a good thing or a bad thing. Money has led to many evils, greed, corruption, killing, lies, stress and the list goes on. We see this in our corporate world and in all levels of politics. Money has also done much good in helping many. Yes in our present day, we need money to survive. But what if we could learn to live without it ? Let me re-phrase, What if we can learn to live without money and rely totally on God ? Interesting ,right ? Did you know that God has an endless supply of resources ? Even the smartest thieves cannot steal all what God has. I’d like to share some amazing stories where people had no money but relied on God. In Matthew 10 , Jesus sends out twelve disciples for a journey. Note Jesus’s instructions in verse 9: “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts—no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep. In verse 16 Jesus indicates : “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. The disciples went out on a journey with no supplies, no provisions and no money. Quite a challenge without any physical resources. All they had was God and it more than enough. The disciples came back all in one piece because God not only provided for their basic needs but also for the work God called them to. A homeless beggar in need in Acts 3:3 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” In this case the man that was lame really did need money to survive. He couldn’t walk. You would think that of all people, the apostles would give this man money. It’s interesting that Peter said he had no money to give him but ended giving him, with God’s help, something better than money. The man was able to walk and leapt for joy. No money needed here. The Rich Man who had it All. In Mark 10:17, we read about the rich young ruler who was very wealthy. He asked Jesus on what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus said to keep his commandments and listed his commandments. The rich man indicated to Jesus that he kept all those commandments since he was a boy. Look at Jesus’s response in verse 21: Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Pretty radical wouldn’t you agree? Jesus wanted him to experience something better than all the wealth he could possibly imagine. A life totally dependent on God. A big step of faith and trust. The rich man face fell down and went away sad because he had great wealth and couldn’t see the greater blessing Jesus had for him. John G. Lake One of the best stories I read about relying on God is the story of John G Lake. John G Lake lived back in the 1900’s and was an insurance salesman. One day God got a hold of his life and wanted him to heal people. He quit the insurance business and healed over 100,000 people around the world. One very inspiring thing that John G Lake said in one of his sermons was “The best day of my life is when I gave up my last dollar.” A wealthy insurance man gave up everything to follow God and healed many. A rich young man giving up everything to follow God. What a great reward he had and now has in heaven. It seemed like Mr. Lake did more when he had no money than when he did. When I performed and did ministry at one of the homeless shelters here in KC, I remember what one of the homeless men told me, “You’d be surprised 0n how little you need when you rely on God and do his work” . That still sticks with me. Sometimes I think what life would be like to live this kind of lifestyle and the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:25 when Jesus says to not worry about life or not to worry about food or clothes and he will provide for us. Maybe there would be less stress because of the trust and faith you develop in God. But I live in the world of college, mortgages, cars, getting to work etc... So I do pray that God can use what I have to bless him. Be Blessed. Thanks for your support and please take care and keep the emails coming. Also remember to pray for leaders and our schools.
