About Chris Emerson

Originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Emerson grew up listening to Classic Rock, Country, and Motown. “As a kid I only got one radio station that came in good on my little AM radio, and it was the Motown station, so that’s what I listened to. My Dad used to sing Beatles songs on his guitar, and my Mom played Stevie Wonder and Gladis Knight around the house. My first record was Ray Charles, ‘Hit The Road Jack’, so to be asked to open for him years later was surreal”.

Emerson pursued a music career on the advice of his high school music teacher. After studying music in Boston, he co-wrote a song with guitarist, Leo Mellace, from Berklee College of Music, and Charles Christopher, background singer for Gloria Estafan, called, ’All Because of You’, which won in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. This caught the attention of SONY Tri-Star Columbia Pictures, who nabbed it for the hit television series, Dawson’s Creek, which led to Emerson signing with Empire/BMG out of NYC.

Initially, The debut release was called, ‘Tourist’ and it came out on start up indie-label, Monomoy Records out of Boston. When their distribution with (expired link). folded, Emerson was picked up by Empire/BMG in NYC and the album was repackaged with four new songs, as is often the case.

The new CD was re-released with the same artwork, as self titled with four new songs, including a Diane Warren song, called, ‘This Could Take All Night’, and the classic, ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ as a bonus track. The song was beautifully produced by Andrew Sherman (Athena Franklin, Mirah Carey, VH1 Essence Awards), and features Emerson's killer falsetto and Andrew on the grand paino and backing arrangements.

'All Because Of You’ was the biggest single at radio off his debut, reaching #22 on the R&R chart, and #23 on the Billboard chart, and #15 on the FMQB chart! It was the 64th most played song at radio in 2003, according to Billboard Magazine! Subsequent releases went to #28 and #34 respectively.

While the songs were being released at radio, Emerson was out on the road on an eighth month national media tour, visiting over a hundred radio and television stations. This landed him on tour, opening for Hootie & the Blowfish, Foreigner, Blues Traveler, Sugar Ray, and Grammy Award Winner, Sean Colvin to name a few. Emerson was even invited to open for Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.

After touring for two years with a five peice band, Emerson moved to Nashville, where he recorded his long awaited second release, 'Shadow of You' in the infamous Ocean Way Studios and The Sound Kitchen, with some of Nashville's top studio aces, even recording songs by top industry writers like, Adam Dorsey, Steve Bogard, and Jeffrey Steele to name a few. The album was Produced by the late Dave Matthews, RIP (not the singer, the producer). Recording took a year and employed a who's who of session players. Fourteen songs in total, and seven were written or co-written by Emerson. It was mastered by the legendary Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound in NYC, before they moved to Nashville.

As major label mergers and the demise of brick and mortar retail gave way to digital downloading, Emerson’s release got caught up in the meat grinder of the music industry, and ’Shadow Of You’ was shelved, before finally being released online with little fan-fare, and no label support. There are some stand out singles on this sophomore release, most notably the power balled, ‘Angel In The Sun’ written by Chris Emerson and guitar hero Jamie Laritz, who co produced the entire album, even playing all the instruments on a few tracks! ‘Angel in The Sun’ is an AC/Country crossover single, perfect for radio, and ‘Live It Up’ penned by Emerson alone, is a straight up driving country rocker.

Emerson has written and recorded hundreds of songs with some very notable songwriters, has 4 Billboard singles, several television and film placements, has received many songwriting awards, and has produced countless radio commercials, and has sung many a demo. He continues to write and record music for television and film, and is working on a new full length CD.

His new album is a culmination of all his styles and influences.
