Celebrate Canadian First Lady of Jazz Eleanor Collins!

You can count me among the people who celebrate Black history 365 days a year, but I do mark the importance of the month of February in particular. Today I'd like to introduce you to a Living Legend, Canadian First Lady of Jazz Eleanor Collins. Born in Edmonton in 1919, Eleanor won a local talent contest at the age of 15. Three years later, she moved to Vancouver to form the Swing Low Quartette, which was often featured on CBC Radio. CBC Television later invited her to star in The Eleanor Show (1955), making her the first Black TV host in North America. Comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald and offers to tour and record in the United States soon followed, but Eleanor chose to remain in Canada. Lucky for us! She was named to the Order of Canada in 2014, and last year, Canada Post issued a stamp in her honour. As I watch a CBC News tribute that debuted on her 100th birthday 3 years ago, I am struck by Eleanor's boundless energy, joy, and gratitude. In turn, I am grateful to celebrate her stunning talent and accomplishments. Please enjoy her 1965 rendition of Lullaby of Birdland and become a fan!
